COLLEGE CAMPUS VISITS AND SUMMER VACATIONS

Summer is a great time for high school students to visit college campuses, especially if it ties into family vacation trips. The hardest part of traveling to campuses is finding the time and the money to get there, so if colleges happen to be on the route to vacation destinations, it makes great sense to schedule the visit.

While it is true that students are not present on the campuses in large numbers, there will be student tour guides who can provide a student point of view and the admission's staff will be able to provide additional student contacts for follow up questions and conversations. The main purpose of a summer visit is to have that chance to compare the college view book with the real thing and decide if the physical campus environment is a match.

For questions to ask during the visit, be sure to visit NSSE:National Survey of Student Engagement.

LOOK TO THE SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE FOR COLLEGE OPTIONS

Instead of turning to lists of where famous people attended college, students searching for colleges will do well to ask the successful, happy adults in their family, community and school where they went to college.

Success in life has less to do with one's choice of college and more with personal qualities and traits and taking advantage of opportunities; talking with adults they admire and finding out about their educational path in life, is a good way for students to identify potential colleges.

WHAT ARE YOU READING THIS SUMMER?

If you are trying to find some interesting summer reading, check out The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. Get inspired to read a good book!

Many colleges assign a common reading for first year students and a recent study, Beach Books: What Do Colleges Want Students to Read Outside Class examines the choice of these books and role they play in college curriculum.
