SHOULD COLLEGE ATHLETES BE PAID?

In a recent issue of The Atlantic, Taylor Branch, a leading civil-rights historian, provides a thought-provoking look at the history of college athletics and the NCAA in the article  The Shame of College Sports.”

According to Branch, lawsuits that are currently working their way through the courts might not only destroy the NCAA, but change the concept of the Student-Athlete and the current definition of amateurism in college sports.

COLLEGE INTERVIEWS CLOSE TO HOME (OR IN YOUR LIVING ROOM!) CAN SAVE YOUR TRAVEL BUDGET

Interviews can be an important aspect of the college admission process, but with airfares increasing and applications deadlines looming, students worry about how to do face-to-face meetings at all the colleges on their list.

A recent college counselor blog in the DC area highlights the availability of interviews close to home as an option for saving money, while still demonstrating interest in the college.

It may also be possible to request a SKYPE interview with the colleges on your list; visit college websites and the admission link for information or to request an off-site interview.

THE CONFUSION AND SECRECY OF ADMISSION WAIT LISTS

At the annual NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) Conference in September, the issue of college admission wait lists and the lack of transparency surrounding their use, was a topic of heated discussion by the counselors in attendance.

The result was a vote by NACAC’s assembly to conduct a formal study to determine how and why the lists operate as they do and if additional guidelines are needed as part of the Association’s current Statement of Principles of Good Practice.
