A DIFFERENT KIND OF RANKING: CONTRIBUTION TO THE PUBLIC GOOD
Most college rankings guides focus on the statistics of the applicant pool or entering freshman class, rather than on the campus learning environment and student outcomes. The Washington Monthly's 2010 liberal arts college rankings, rate schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories:
- Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).
- Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and
- Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

GREEN INITIATIVES: RHODES COLLEGE INTRODUCES ZIPCAR AND ECKERD COLLEGE EXPANDS YELLOW BIKE PROGRAM
With the college cranking up for a new semester, Rhodes students will be able to reserve Zipcars on campus to run errands, shop at the grocery or mall, go out on the town or even use for short weekend trips. "In addition to easing parking demands, Zipcar is a cost-effective and convenient transportation option that will help Rhodes reduce its carbon footprint," Matt Malloy, vice president of global university operations at Zipcar, said in a statement. "Zipcar is environmentally friendly as it takes 15 to 20 privately owned vehicles off the road."
Eckerd College uses bikes, not cars, to help students and faculty get around the St. Petersburg, FL campus community. The Yellow Bike Program has been expanded to include using them for campus tours this semester. The Program was recognized in 2005 by the National Wildlife Federation, and it continues to gain local and national news attention.
